January 31, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) should keep Belarus on its agenda as repression in the country is worsening, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said on January 31, the 33rd anniversary of her country’s accession to the international forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition leader called on the OSCE to demand access to political prisoners and hold Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime accountable for its crimes. “Lasting peace in our region is impossible without a free Belarus,” she said <\/a>on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 31, the Belarusian human rights community recognizes 1,245 political prisoners, though the actual number is likely higher due to undocumented cases. The authorities deny the existence of political prisoners, using ordinary criminal articles for politically motivated persecution and branding dissenters as “extremists” and “terrorists.” The OSCE could not observe this year’s presidential election in Belarus because of a late invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
