February 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Politically-motivated persecution targeting regime critics continues in Belarus with the upcoming trial of the Lapie\u0161ka family \u2013 Mika\u0142aj, his wife Alena and son Mikita \u2013 for participating in a 2020 postelection protest rally, according to the electronic court schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases documented on February 1 and 2 included new criminal charges against Kiry\u0142 Vieviel, who is serving a three-year prison term in a politically-motivated case. Authorities accuse him of inciting hatred and association with an extremist group, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. His new trial is scheduled for February 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Miron\u010dyk and Vadzim \u017dyvale\u016dski were tried in late January in Hrodna for sharing opposition content, the Sudy, Zaderzhaniya. Grodno i Oblast<\/em> Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physical education teacher Alena Radamanava was tried on similar charges as well as for alleged violations of holding mass events, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu<\/em> Telegram channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivan Dzienisienka, head of the procurement department at the Re\u010dyca Metalware Plant in the Homiel region, was fired for political reasons, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said. Last month, he had served five days in jail for sharing opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His dismissal followed the short-term detention of Viktar Samon\u010dyk, a manager at the same plant who was arrested for reportedly refusing to fire regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, an activist of the European Belarus civil campaign, after she had served her fourth prison term, her husband Andrej \u0160arenda said on Facebook. Three of the terms were given for allegedly disobeying prison authorities, a charge often used to keep regime critics behind bars longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,244 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
