February 3, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Belarusian National Olympic Committee (NOC) has said that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recognized the election of Viktar \u0141uka\u0161enka as NOC president by its General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian leader\u2019s son took over the NOC in February 2021, but the IOC did not recognize him until his re-election on January 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NOC said that the IOC would restore the NOC\u2019s access “to all Olympic Solidarity programs,” noting an improvement in relations with the Olympic body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The General Assembly to voted 82 to two with three abstentions on January 15 to re-elect Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s eldest son. No other candidates were reported to run for the office. The IOC has not made any official statement that it recognizes the voting results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka had led the NOC since 1997 until leaving the post in 2020 under pressure from the IOC over reprisals against athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and a number of other democratic countries have imposed sanctions on Viktar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
