February 4, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has blamed his ministers for a massive foreign currency outflow, at a meeting with his presidential campaign staff today, the state-run media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, the government introduced restrictions on the sale of shares and the distribution of profit and dividends for business owners from \u201cunfriendly countries\u201d but later approved a procedure for bypassing the restrictions on a case-by-case bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHundreds of millions [dollars]\u201d were withdrawn from Belarus abroad in one year, contrary to the government’s statements, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed, citing data from Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[The government] reported earlier there was no problem: if they withdrew any [cash], it was 15 million or something like that in a year. But it turns out that it’s not millions, but hundreds of millions,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201c[They’re] withdrawing dividends. Did they personally earn this money? They paid a meagre salary to our people, went abroad and cashed out more money. Is this normal? We will soon sort it out with the government, the way they implemented the decisions I made,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the Belarusian government resigned as required by the Constitution after the January 21-26 presidential election. The cabinet will keep working until the appointment of new ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka invited his campaign managers to suggest candidates for ministers, announcing his plans to set up a selection commission of senior officials, including the speakers of both houses and the prosecutor general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2022, \u0141uka\u0161enka threatened to nationalize foreign-owned companies should they decide to pull their assets out of Belarus over its complicity in the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier that year, the government compiled a list of Belarusian companies with owners from \u201cunfriendly\u201d countries, prohibiting them from selling their shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original list was expanded from 190 to 1,796 entries after several revisions. The ban targeted foreign shareholders from countries that imposed sanctions on Belarusian individuals or entities, including Austria, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka criticized the government earlier for its flexible approach to the sale of assets by foreigners from \u201cunfriendly countries.\u201d However, he issued an edict later to authorize the cabinet to make exemptions on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last spring, the government restricted the distribution of profit and dividends to owners and shareholders of Belarus-based companies from \u201cunfriendly states\u201d until the end of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
