February 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian opposition will not issue New Belarus Passports or collect relevant biometric data until compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is confirmed and all legal issues are sorted out, project manager Marius Gudelaitis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told Pozirk <\/em>that the Lithuanian printer Gars\u0173 Pasaulis has already transferred all project-related materials and printed forms to the opposition passport center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, the Lithuanian portal 15min.lt<\/em> reported that the company pulled out of the project and notified the interior ministry of the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are suspending cooperation with the institution Belarusian Passport Center and production of this unrecognized Belarusian passport,” the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians are in exile as a result of the political crisis. Many of them cannot renew their passports because of the risk of contact with Belarusian officials. The Belarusian opposition has decided to print alternative passports to help their compatriots legalize their status, but the opening of a passport center in Vilnius worries Lithuanian politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, 15min.lt<\/em> cited an explainer from Lithuanian Deputy Prosecutor General Gintas Ivanauskas saying that the New Belarus Passports should be considered invalid, and that it is up to court to decide whether their production is legal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
