February 9, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Zianon Pa\u017aniak, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s longtime rival and the head of the Volnaja Bie\u0142aru\u015b movement, has urged the Western countries to launch talks with Minsk to negotiate the release of political prisoners, whom he described as hostages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pa\u017aniak suggested using the incentive of lifting some sanctions in exchange for the prisoners\u2019 release and an end to politically-motivated reprisals. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing is more important than human life,” the politician said. “Here we stand on a humanitarian position – to save people. . . We urge Western politicians: start negotiations with this barbaric regime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pardon edicts that \u0141uka\u0161enka has been issuing since last July are signs of readiness for talks, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 9, human rights defenders identified at least 1,229 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
