February 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Sanctions involving asset freeze abroad are useless, Ihar Karpienka, chairman of the Belarusian Central Election Commission, has told the state-run Belarus 1 <\/em>TV channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His other comment regarded the resolution on the recent Belarusian presidential election by the European Parliament. MEPs were inclined to condemn the election and expressed their position via the resolution, he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karpienka and five other Belarusian officials were sanctioned by Canada and the United Kingdom in late January \u201cin an immediate response to rigged presidential election in Belarus\u201d which extended Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s 30-year rule in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The election took place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics, drawing severe criticism from democratic countries and exiled Belarusian opposition for the lack of transparency and repressive environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
