February 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is a “Russian puppet” and lacks the power to decide on the release of political prisoners, Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, a former prisoner evacuated from Belarus upon release, has told journalists in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist recalled that a Russian curator was in charge of Belarusian propaganda workers who interviewed her in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can’t help but laugh when I hear about negotiations with \u0141uka\u0161enka,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere will be new political prisoners if we don’t keep up sanctions pressure on the regime,\u201d \u0160arenda-Panasiuk added, calling for a \u201ctough economic blockade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarus is a transit country. Why is there still trade with the concentration camp and some kind of transit?\u201d she wondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her comment comes days after veteran opposition politician Zainon Pa\u017aniak called for talks with the Belarusian long-time ruler on political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160arenda-Panasiuk was in detention since January 3, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six months after her arrest, a Brest court sentenced her to two years in prison for violence against a police officer and insults against the head of state and an official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, she was found guilty of disobeying prison authorities and had her prison term extended three times. Judges additionally sentenced her to three years and one day behind bars. She served her sentence in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
