February 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian opposition missed a small chance for the international recognition of the New Belarus Passport, Valeryj Kavale\u016dski, who was in charge of the alternative ID project, has told the Obychnoe Utro<\/em> YouTube show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pro-democracy forces are past the peak of their political activity, struggling to break a stalemate in the efforts to secure the release of political prisoners and bring an end to politically-motivated reprisals, said Kavale\u016dski, who is now in charge of the Euro-Atlantic Affairs Agency nonprofit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPolitical history has moved on, [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka proved that he was able to stabilize his situation, subdue the elites and cope with certain economic challenges,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe project might have had only one shot at success,” Kavale\u016dski said. “Very careful preparation is required to rule out any doubt that this project really deserves the political and practical support of Western countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians are in exile as a result of the political crisis. Many of them cannot renew their passports because of the risk of contact with Belarusian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition attempted to print alternative passports to help their compatriots legalize their status, opening pre-registration in late January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the opening of a passport center in Vilnius worries Lithuanian politicians who have already indicated that Vilnius will not recognize the New Belarus Passport as a valid ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian court may outlaw the New Belarus Passport, criminalizing its production, Lithuania\u2019s Deputy Prosecutor General Gintas Ivanauskas said earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, the Lithuanian printer Gars\u0173 Pasaulis put the New Belarus Passport project on hold, notifying the interior ministry of the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
