February 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Viktoryja Kul\u0161a, Volha Majorava and Aleha Hnauk, serving prison terms on charges widely seen as politically motivated, have serious health issues, Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, a former prisoner who fled Belarus upon release, told journalists in Vilnius yesterday. After months of hunger strike, Kul\u0161a reportedly suffered kidney failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prison authorities use torture and place inmates in punishment cells for refusing to sign pardon requests, the activist added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus from February 8 to 10 included the trial of notary Iryna Razancava in Kry\u010da\u016d, Mahilo\u016d region, on charges of sharing banned content, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu. Novosti Vitebska<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persecution of journalists<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court upheld a four-year prison sentence for journalist Volha Radzivonava, sentenced for contributing articles to the German newspaper Die Tageszeitung<\/em>, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brest-based journalist Aleh Supruniuk has not been answering phone calls and has not been seen online since January 22, the BAJ reported. He may be held in a pre-trial detention center on criminal charges as his name was not mentioned in local court schedules that list minor offense trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ta\u0107ciana Franckievi\u010d, mother of jailed anarchist activist Alaksandar Fran\u010dkievi\u010d, went on trial in Viciebsk on charges of facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Her sister, Natalla \u0141abacevi\u010d, whose son had been previously persecuted in a politically-motivated case, is tried together with her on the same charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rus\u0142an Zubko\u016d is on trial in Brest, Viasna said. Authorities accuse him of facilitating extremism and insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. The latter charge was filed against him last year, but the first trial’s outcome remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Nikana\u016d went on trial in Hrodna last week on charges of inciting hatred, insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka and violent disorder, the Sudy, Zaderzhaniya. Grodno i Oblast<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days ago, authorities stepped up controls at the borders of Belarus with Poland and Lithuania, checking smartphones and Google search history, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 11, human rights defenders identified at least 1,229 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
