February 12,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on February 11 as the Justice for Journalists Foundation, a London-based nonprofit, reported at least 759 attacks by the authorities on independent journalists and media workers in Belarus over the past two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Or\u0161a, Viciebsk region, jailed Alaksiej Sukorski for seven days for sharing opposition content, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aleh Markialevi\u010d was tried on similar charges in Voranava, Hrodna region, but the outcome remains unknown, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry announced extremist content designations for Po\u0142k Kalino\u016dskaha<\/em> Telegram channel and several others; Russian journalist Alexander Nevzorov’s social media and Instagram page by Polish musician Sw@da of the Sw@da and Niczos, expected to take part in the Eurovision contest selection this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal charges and proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities accused a 34-year-old from Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, of abusing state symbols for tearing down the official flag from a store, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court sentenced Natalla \u0141adu\u0107ka, 61, to four years in prison and fined her 25,200 rubels (some $7,500) on charges of facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups, Dissidentby reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Kandry\u010dyn, who allegedly resisted arrest in an extremism-related case with a knife, went on trial in Mahilo\u016d on charges of illegal actions with weapons, violence against police officers and murder, the electronic court schedule said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prominent fitness coach Natalla Nava\u017ey\u0142ava will go on trial at a Minsk court on February 17 to answer charges of violent disorder, according to the electronic court schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state-run Bie\u0142po\u0161ta mail service employees started asking for IDs of people who transfer money to political prisoners, MAYDAY.TEAM reported. Transfers are now accepted only from close family members who are sometimes asked about their second citizenship, residence at the address of registration and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 12, human rights defenders identified at least 1,229 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
