February 12, Pozirk<\/em> <\/strong>The Congress Bureau of Local and Regional Authorities, one of the key bodies at the Council of Europe (CoE), at a meeting in Luxembourg two days ago, invited Belarusian pro-democracy forces to participate in the Congress sessions and committee meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Congress Bureau described the invitation as support for local democracy and self-government in a future free and democratic Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja called on the Congress to pay more attention to Belarus as she addressed its session. The politician asked for assistance in decentralizing governance and empowering local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dWe cannot make the change in isolation from the rest of Europe,\u201d she said, stressing the crucial roles of the CoE for Belarusians’ European perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
