February 12, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Minsk region prosecutor’s office reports that in 2024, it made 450 requests for courts to recognize social media accounts as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judges gave this status to 279 TikTok accounts, 109 Instagram pages, 33 Telegram channels and chats, 11 YouTube channels, five VKontakte accounts, four Odnoklassniki accounts and one Facebook account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In total, since 2021, Minsk region prosecutors have sent over 1,000 such requests to the courts,” the press release said. They were aimed against \u201cdeliberately false information\u201d about the economic, social and legal situation in the country and posts inciting hatred, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2020, justice officials have interpreted virtually any expression of dissent as extremism. They treat the distribution of \u201cextremist content\u201d as a misdemeanor and the creation of \u201cextremist groups\u201d as a felony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, at least 2,000 people were held accountable for sharing \u201cextremist content.\u201d \u201cThis figure is incomplete and may be much higher, since the regime is increasingly carefully concealing the repression in the country,\u201d the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
