February 14, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Russia must be stopped from destroying the environment, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has commented on reports about a Russian drone hitting the shelter over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For Belarusians, Chernobyl is not just history\u2014it\u2019s a deep wound,” the politician said on X. “We suffered more than half of the nuclear fallout after the 1986 disaster. We cannot let Russia destroy our nation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Russian attack drone carrying a high-explosive warhead attacked the Chernobyl shelter early this morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported. \u201cThe only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear power plants, and wages war without any regard for the consequences is today\u2019s Russia. This is a terrorist threat to the entire world,\u201d he said in an X post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian emergency workers extinguished the fire at the shelter which suffered considerable damage. Radiation levels are being monitored and have not increased, Zelensky noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded in the early hours of April 26, 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the plant is located in Ukraine, about 70 percent of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus, heavily contaminating one-fourth of the country, one-fifth of its agricultural land and affecting at least 7 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
