February 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Seven private educational institutions have been granted authorization to operate in Belarus, Education Minister Andrej Ivaniec told the state-run STV <\/em>TV channel yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, the government introduced the licensing requirement for private schools in Belarus after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka had instructed officials to take the education system under control. The move was followed by closures of private schools but the exact number remains unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of them, about 50, operated in Minsk and the Minsk region, Ivaniec said yesterday, claiming that only half of them had been offering education services before the licensing legislation came into force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All schools must follow a government-approved curriculum to guarantee the quality of education, he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The licensing of private schools was part of a large-scale crackdown on research and education following the 2020 political crisis in Belarus. Students, teachers and researchers have often been expelled, imprisoned or forced into exile, while secondary schools started teaching military and patriotic classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, three major private Belarusian universities operating since the 1990s terminated admissions and announced closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
