February 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus from February 15 to 17 included the arrest of blogger Palina Zyl from Mazyr, Homiel region, and her boyfriend by the Minsk police. Both may be accused of participating in protests and association with an extremist group, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siarhiej Mucha and Alaksandar La\u016dkovi\u010d were tried in the Viciebsk region for allegedly sharing opposition content, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu <\/em>Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Ne\u015bciarovi\u010d, owner of the Hrodna-based ethnic store Cudo\u016dnia under arrest since February 6, is accused of violent disorder, Pozirk <\/em>reported. This charge is often used to persecute opposition supporters in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna judges opened proceedings in two criminal trials: former border guard Siarhiej Cierachovi\u010d faces high treason charges, while Alaksandar \u0160ajpak is persecuted for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> and the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aleh \u0160y\u0142a\u016d, Vadzim Karpa\u016d and Siarhiej Harun went on trial in Brest on rioting charges, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalla Nava\u017ey\u0142ava, presumably a prominent fitness trainer, is answering protest-related charges in Minsk, according to the electronic court schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Homiel Regional Prosecutor\u2019s Office forwarded to court a criminal case against BySol Solidarity Foundation founders, the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office reported. Prosecutors charged unnamed opposition activists with inciting hatred, promoting terrorism, association with an extremist group, insulting Luka\u0161enka and participating in an armed conflict abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 18, human rights defenders identified at least 1,218 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
