February 18, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Prosecutors from W\u0142odawa, a town in eastern Poland, forwarded to court a criminal case against Belarusian Ivan B. and Ukrainian Alexei V., accused of transporting foreigners who entered Poland illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men made dozens of trips from the Belarusian-Polish border to Germany between May and September 2024, according to case files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both defendants are held in custody and may face up to eight years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the European Union via Belarus surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
