February 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lithuania\u2019s interior ministry, tax and border authorities agreed yesterday to check levels of diesel fuel in the tanks of trucks in transit in response to a recent surge in illegal diesel fuel sales, Lithuania’s Customs Department reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the year, Belarusian and Russian truckers have been reportedly illegally siphoning fuel for its subsequent resale while transiting via Lithuania. Up to 1,000 liters of diesel fuel can be sold in this way from an average-sized truck on the black market, the Customs Department said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estimated damages from illegal sales may amount to \u20ac20 million per year, the agency added, noting that controls may be expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the possible moves includes limiting the amount of imported fuel, as Latvia and Poland do. Lithuanian authorities have already dispatched additional patrol teams to monitor areas where truckers may be siphoning diesel fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diesel fuel prices in Lithuania, at around \u20ac1.6 per liter, are twice as high as in Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
