{"id":126882,"date":"2025-02-18T19:06:28","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T16:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/126882\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"prosecutor-unhappy-with-progress-of-genocide-studies","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/126882\/","title":{"rendered":"Prosecutor unhappy with progress of genocide studies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>February 18, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian prosecutor general last year complained to the prime minister about \u201csystemic violations\u201d in commemorating civilians killed during World War II, according to a leaked document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BelPol association of former security officers has published Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied\u2019s letter to Prime Minister Raman Ha\u0142o\u016d\u010danka, presumably sent in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1.6 million killed and buried citizens have not been identified, while only 112,000 names of civilian victims have been established, \u0160vied said in the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTargeted activities to identify genocide victims based on archival sources are not being carried out. Responsible persons have not been appointed. Archival research work is not being performed or has a one-time, unsystematic and optional character,\u201d he complained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He accused the defense ministry, executive committees and archives of not doing enough to identify victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state program Perpetuating the Memory of Those Killed Defending the Fatherland for 2021\u20132025 prescribes authorities to identify 6,500 victims per year, including 5,000 buried and 1,500 missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160vied has spearheaded a government campaign to highlight the genocidal dimensions of massacres committed by the Nazis in 1941\u201343.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years ago, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka signed a law to criminalize genocide denial.
