February 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Anatol Charyton\u010dyk, senior researcher at the BEROC think tank, has said at a news conference that Belarus\u2019 overheated economy creates risks to macroeconomic balance as the country entered 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official targets of 4.1 percent for economic growth and 5 percent for inflation look uncoordinated, he said. Given the existing resource, technological and institutional constrains, balanced growth should be at 1.5\u20132 percent per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the Russian economy slows down to 1\u20132 percent in 2025, the only way to ensure the 4.1 percent growth of Belarus\u2019 GDP would be to stimulate domestic demand through an excessively soft budget and monetary policy,\u201d he said. \u201cThis would lead to an expansion of excessive demand, higher inflation and increased pressure on foreign trade, the Forex market and the rubel exchange rate, as compared to the baseline scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if the government decides to relax price controls substantially to achieve the GDP target, inflation could surge to 10 percent or even higher this year, he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
