February 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on February 19 included the trial of Armenian blogger Roza Babakhanyan known as Bella in Homiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She may have been jailed for 15 days for sharing banned content, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Earlier, blogger Alaksandar \u0141ap\u0161yn said that Babakhanyan was arrested on several criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ina A\u015bviecimskaja was tried for sharing opposition content in Viciebsk yesterday, but the sentence remains unknown, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu. Novosti Vitebska<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Minsk judge held a public hearing at the S\u0142ody\u010d candy factory against a 25-year-old woman accused of participating in 2020 postelection protests. She was given two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement on violent disorder charges, pro-government sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Nikana\u016d went on trial in Hrodna yesterday, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said. Authorities persecute him for his online activities and accuse him of inciting hatred, insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and participating in protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Belarusian courts passed more than 1,700 sentences on protest-related charges, of these more than 1,000 verdicts involved violent disorder charges and about 250, insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka, Human Constanta reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past three years, the BySol Solidarity Foundation has received more than 25,000 requests for assistance via Telegram, its head Andrej Stry\u017eak said on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 20, human rights defenders identified at least 1,218 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
