{"id":1271,"date":"2023-08-02T13:06:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-02T10:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=1271"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","slug":"supreme-court-upholds-lengthy-prison-terms-for-worker-movement-activists","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/1271\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court upholds lengthy prison terms for worker movement activists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 2,&nbsp;<em>BPN<\/em>.<\/strong>&nbsp;The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal against lengthy prison sentences for Rabo\u010dy Ruch activists, its press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, authorities sentenced U\u0142adzimir \u017dura\u016dka and Alaksandar Kap\u0161ul to 15 years in prison; Andrej Pahiery\u0142a, Siarhiej \u0160elest and Alaksandar Ha\u0161nika\u016d, to 14 years; Siarhiej Dziuba, Ihar Minc, Valancin Cieranievi\u010d and Siarhiej \u0160ame\u0107ka, to 12 years; Hanna Ab\u0142ab, to 11 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charges against them ranged from slandering Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka to high treason and establishing an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators accused the activists of illegally collecting confidential information on how Belarusian state-run businesses circumvent Western sanctions. They also said defendants passed that information to foreign countries and organizations, including US and Lithuanian&nbsp;secret services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the defendants were accused of planning subversive acts at the Hrodna Azot nitrogen fertilizer plant and the Belarusian Steel Works. Human rights groups dismissed the charges as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities used recordings of a Zoom call with Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja as evidence, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. All defendants pleaded not guilty. Pahiery\u0142a pleaded guilty to one charge of slander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabo\u010dhy Ruch was established after the disputed 2020 presidential election as an association to defend worker rights and freedoms.
