February 21, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>. <\/em>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on February 20 as a judge in Va\u016dkavysk, Hrodna region, opened a new trial against jailed Eduard Babaryka, son of imprisoned former presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities accuse him of misconduct in prison, a charge often used in Belarus to keep political opponents behind bars longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior Vasil Dzemidovi\u010d, 72, is on trial in Smalavi\u010dy, Minsk region, for allegedly insulting officials, Viasna reported. This is his ninth criminal case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dani\u0142a \u010cybisa\u016d’s trial opened yesterday in Homiel, Viasna said. He faces charges of calling for sanctions and facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) added 15 people to the list of persons \u201cinvolved in terrorist activities,\u201d taking their total to 1,248 people, including 561 Belarusians, its Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of them is Aleh Sy\u010do\u016d, imprisoned for nine years in a high-profile case over an attack on a Russian military aircraft at an airfield near Minsk in 2023 as well as five other defendants in the same case convicted to lengthy prison terms without being present at the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kanstancin Karpa\u016d was tried for sharing opposition content in Homiel on February 8, Viasna\u2019s Homiel branch said. The sentence remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joel Juro\u016dski, Viktar Vialuha, Viktar Matusievi\u010d and Ina A\u015bviecimskaja were tried on similar charges in the Viciebsk region, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu. Novosti Vitebska<\/em> Telegram channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences in all these trials remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 21, human rights defenders identified at least 1,217 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
