February 21, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktar Karankievi\u010d and his Russian counterpart Aleksandr Novak discussed deepening integration within the Union State of Belarus and Russia in Moscow yesterday, the Russian government’s press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talks also focused on trade, economic cooperation and joint projects in the energy sector, including nuclear power, as well as progress in the formation of a common oil and gas market, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bilateral trade is likely to hit record numbers based on last year’s data, Novak said, citing the rise of 6.5 percent in January-October 2024 and a 16-percent surge in commodity items trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian side did not report on the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Union State treaty between Belarus and Russia entered into force in January 2000 after ratification by the parliaments of the two countries. The deal is of unlimited duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Russia launched an upgrade of the Union State to bind the two countries together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2021, Minsk and Moscow signed 28 Union State programs focusing on macroeconomic, industrial and agricultural policies, tax and customs harmonization and a common energy market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a security guarantees deal that provides for defending the Union State territory and border with \u201call available forces and means,\u201d including the use of Russian tactical nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
