February 22, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Ukrainian emergency workers keep eliminating the consequences of the February 14 Russian drone attack on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that damaged the confinement shelter\u2019s external cladding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To extinguish smoldering fires, rescuers have to cut and partially open the shelter’s structures and monitor it from the air, Ukraine\u2019s State Agency on Exclusion Zone Management reports, noting that the radiation level at the power plant remains stable and has not increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency warned yesterday that the attack damaged the shelter’s outer and inner cladding and its main cranes, affecting its safe operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the shelter was hit by a Russian drone. Russia denied any claims it attacked Chernobyl, stating its military does not strike Ukrainian nuclear infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded in the early hours of April 26, 1986. The New Safe Confinement around the destroyed reactor was built in 2016 to prevent the release of radiation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the plant is located in Ukraine, about 70 percent of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus in 1986, heavily contaminating one-fourth of the country, one-fifth of its agricultural land and affecting at least 7 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
