February 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Irregular border crossings from Belarus into the European Union by third-country foreigners have reached 490 since the start of February, rising 13.7 percent compared to January and 7 percent year on year, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2018s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland thwarted at least 353 clandestine entry attempts in the first three weeks of February; Lithuania, 71; Latvia, 66.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the European Union has not allowed 921 people to cross illegally via Belarus, with attempts growing significantly compared to last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland was the major target with 636 irregular crossings, while Latvia and Lithuania reported 198 and 87 attempts, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
