{"id":127576,"date":"2025-02-24T18:23:29","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T15:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/127576\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"un-committee-calls-on-belarus-to-review-anti-extremism-articles","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/127576\/","title":{"rendered":"UN committee calls on Belarus to review anti-extremism articles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>February 24, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) has called on Belarus to review and amend anti-extremism articles of the Criminal Code frequently used by authorities to persecute journalists and civic society activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEDAW included the call in the \u201cadvanced unedited version\u201d of its concluding observations, released on February 24 after a session that concluded on February 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document also criticizes anti-terrorist laws and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s edict that allow security forces to use force against civilians, including women, and give them \u201cimmunity from liability for the harm caused.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee urged Belarus to \u201censure that women human rights defenders, women political activists, CSO [civil society organization] representatives and journalists, whether in the State party or in exile, can freely express their opinion and pursue their legitimate human rights advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEDAW is gravely concerned about reports of inhumane conditions of detention for women, such as the restricted access of women detainees to effective and affordable legal assistance; persistent reports of gender-based violence, including sexual violence and ill-treatment; the absence of independent and confidential complaint mechanisms; the mandatory nature of forced labor as a criminal punishment, without regulation or guarantees of fair remuneration or compliance with decent work standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting Belarus\u2019 report to CEDAW in early February, the country\u2019s permanent representative to the UN Office at Geneva, \u0141arysa Belskaja, dismissed the committee\u2019s assessments of repression as \u201cinadequate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEDAW is made up of independent experts monitoring compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
