February 25, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution of Belarusians reported from February 22 to 24 involved defamation charges: a 62-year-old woman from the Homiel region was arrested in Russia\u2019s St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is wanted in Belarus for posting critical comments about Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka from November 2021 to September 2022, Fontanka<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another development, Lubo\u016d Vakar went on trial in Viciebsk yesterday for allegedly insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka, the Vitebsk, Ya gulayu. Novosti Vitebsk<\/em>a Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catholic priest D\u017amitryj Malec was tried for sharing banned content in Lida, Hrodna region, Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija said. The sentence remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry announced extremist content designations for sasha3procenta.by<\/em>, \u0435-belarus.c\u043em\/ru<\/em> and more than a dozen social media accounts on various platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persecution of journalists<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Palina Pitkievi\u010d will go on trial at the Minsk City Court on March 7 to answer an extremism charge, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. The Committee for State Security associated her with the MediaIQ<\/em> project, branded an extremist group last June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Dzianis Iva\u0161yn was released from a punishment cell at Prison No 8 in \u017dodzina, Minsk region, after spending 15 days there, said a Telegram channel, monitoring his persecution. Prison authorities regularly place him in punishment cells, according to the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Alena Prychod\u017aka is wanted in Belarus on extremism-related charges, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled writer Sa\u0161a Filipienka faces criminal charges of inciting hatred in Belarus for urging people to participate in protests, he told Radyjo Svaboda<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksim So\u0142ap, former engineer at the Belarusian Railways, went on trial in Brest yesterday for allegedly harming the national security of Belarus, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Chameljanski, a former employee at EPAM software company, is on trial in Minsk on violent disorder charges that authorities in Belarus often use to persecute political opponents, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court will hear an appeal by imprisoned military analyst Andrej Parotnika\u016d on March 14, the electronic court schedule said. Parotnika\u016d was accused of high treason and four other crimes but authorities did not disclose the sentence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 25, human rights defenders identified at least 1,209 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
