February 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> At least 89 people were subjected to politically motivated criminal prosecution in January, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It prosecuted 65 men and 24 women. Additionally, one person was sentenced without being present at the trial. Of them, 55 were accused of violent disorder for participation in peaceful protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights activists documented the largest number of politically-motivated criminal cases in Minsk\u201442 in January, followed by the Brest region with 23, the Mahilo\u016d region with eight; the Minsk region with six; the Homiel and Hrodna regions with four each; and the Viciebsk region with two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In five trials, relatives or even whole families were sentenced. In three cases, people were sentenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe instrument of repressing Belarusians through criminal articles and charges has made citizens afraid of phone calls from unknown numbers, assuming that it is the police department calling,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna reported a decrease in documented political prisoners to 1,245 on January 31 from 1,265 on December 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group reported a 14-month high number of politically-motivated criminal cases in December (188).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
