February 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Information Minister Marat Marka\u016d urged the state-run media to produce \u201chigh-quality counterpropaganda,\u201d speaking at his ministry’s board meeting yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past 10 years, the information ministry has blocked access to about 15,000 online outlets including more than 3,150 “destructive” accounts last year alone, he said, in a reference to critical voices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese numbers show that our rivals will keep paying attention to us,\u201d Marka\u016d said, claiming that \u201cbillions are invested to destabilize Belarus today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official praised the state-run media for increasing their YouTube followers by 44 percent last year to 7.5 million, attributing the surge to an expansion of younger audiences and a new focus on blogging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose who keep fighting us on the other side of the barricades are technologically savvy and snaky people, although they may have a limited access to big funding for the time being,\u201d said U\u0142adzimir Piarco\u016d, deputy head of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s administration, in an apparent reference to the US freeze on foreign aid. \u201cBut they will get funding anyway, and the fight will continue for the minds of those who are younger, who will go to the polls [in the presidential election] in 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government banned the independent media outlets as \u201cextremist groups\u201d in Belarus, driving hundreds of journalists into exile after the disputed 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities routinely use terrorism and extremism designations to silence critical voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
