February 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have sent the European Commission a document proposing one line of defense on their borders with Belarus and Russia and estimating the cost of several continental defense projects, Euractiv <\/em>reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that the document is intended to influence the drafting of the White Paper on future EU defense, expected to identify the key projects for the Europeans to invest in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating the North-East Border Shield (NEBS), common ammunition stockpiles and an air defense shield, as well as ensuring the security of the maritime domain, are being considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NEBS would unite the Eastern Shield of Poland and the Baltic Defense Line of the Baltic States, and could also include the Finnish border with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to calculations by Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the necessary investments for this project would amount to \u20ac8-10 billion \u201cfor a long list of items,\u201d Euractiv<\/em> noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the frontline states, protecting the border with Russia and Belarus is key to defending the European Union,\u201d the website said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland and the Baltic states are urging the EU to urgently bolster their borders with increased counter-mobility, surveillance and defense measures, including joint investments in fortifications and high-tech systems. They propose a \u20ac100 billion EU-wide defense program by 2028, with half to be spent on ammunition and missile stockpiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
