February 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusians need to change their worldview, Nobel Prize-winning writer \u015aviat\u0142ana Aleksijevi\u010d said in Vilnius on Friday, reflecting on protesters\u2019 failure to bring about change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to design some new worldview. It\u2019s strange to me that the elite and philosophers are silent. We need to arm ourselves with a new outlook, not a new machine gun. We need to change something in our worldview,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recalled the rallies whose participants radiated kindness and joy. \u201cWe went out thinking that [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka would see that there were so many of us, that he did not know us, that we were completely different\u2014and there would be a transfer of power,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But \u0141uka\u0161enka \u201cwould not go without blood,\u201d she added. \u201cThere was something about him that had to be remembered. But we made a mistake, we did not remember. We thought that freedom is a festival,\u201d Aleksijevi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted, however, that she would not support a violent coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer warned of the risk of civil war and said the future was unpredictable. \u201cIt seems to me that there are trials ahead, and we must prepare for them,\u201d she said, asserting that the Belarusian people have not been completely defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
