March 4, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja who arrived in Italy yesterday has met Sara Funaro, the mayor of Florence, to discuss support to exiled Belarusians, her aide Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician suggested opening a shelter in Florence for Belarusians who fled their country fearing politically-motivated reprisals. “The first weeks and months abroad are the hardest, I know this from my own experience as a single mother of two children in exile. I hope that this project will become reality soon,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja also lobbied for funding opportunities for Belarusian artists and students who face persecution in Belarus for participating in 2020 postelection protests and opposing Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funaro awarded Cichano\u016dskaja Florence’s Seal of Peace for promoting peace and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian politician’s visit to Italy will feature an address to the second meeting of parliamentary groups from 20 countries that support democracy in Belarus on March 6 in Rome. Their first meeting took place in 2023 in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
