March 5, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Irregular border crossings from Belarus into the European Union by third-country foreigners rose to 71 in the first three days of March from 43 and 42 attempts recorded in early January and February, respectively, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month, Poland thwarted at least 50 attempts and Latvia, 21 attempts. Lithuanian border guards have not reported irregular crossings since the start of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clandestine entry attempts fell considerably compared to two previous years when the EU documented 199 and 256 attempts for a similar period, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the EU has not allowed 1,188 people to cross illegally via Belarus. Poland was the major target with 861 irregular crossings, followed by Latvia with 228 attempts and Lithuania with 99 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
