March 6, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Foreign investment from countries that Minsk considers unfriendly fell by almost 43 percent from $3.5 billion in 2016 to $2 billion in 2023, said Maryja Sa\u0142omka, an expert affiliated with the Economics Institute at the Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The share of foreign direct investments from these countries dropped from 42.8 percent to 33.2 percent in this period, she noted in her article published in the February issue of the Belarus-based Finance, Accounting, Audit<\/em> journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trend remains in place, as the proportion shrank to 26.6 percent and the investment amount decreased to $815.5 million in the first half of 2024, the researcher noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union remains the major investor among countries that Minsk listed as “unfriendly,” while some countries, such as Germany and Switzerland, even posted a rise in investments, the article said, noting that foreign direct investment from Belgium increased 20-fold in 2023 compared with 2016 despite a sharp reduction in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government considers Albania, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the European Union, Montenegro, New Zealand, Norway, North Macedonia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States as unfriendly states for introducing sanctions against it over human rights abuses and its complicity in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
