March 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> French Senator Micha\u00ebl Weber has called for caution regarding certain concessions made by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, who is releasing political prisoners in batches in the hope that the West would ease sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senator made his remark at a meeting of the alliance For a Democratic Belarus in Rome, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s adviser Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk immediately replaces those it has released with other political prisoners, Weber said. In his opinion, the path of dialogue has little chance of success with autocrats who mock conventions and international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that the only way to secure the unconditional release of political prisoners was to overthrow \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the West had considerable leverage over Belarus through sanctions but continued to be quite lenient towards \u0141uka\u0161enka, hoping to keep Belarusian troops from invading Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weber linked Belarus’ future to the result of the ongoing war in Ukraine, saying it was crucial to develop a strategy on Minsk in the context of the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opinion, Kyiv has been reluctant to work with the Belarusian opposition, but the EU could facilitate such ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
