March 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Judges in Belarus have sentenced at least 188 people for calling for sanctions against the state, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If 48 people were sentenced on this charge before the beginning of 2023, by the beginning of 2025 there were already 173. According to Viasna, 157 people who were tried for calling for sanctions were sentenced to prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four of those imprisoned are foreign nationals: Latvians Dmitrijs Mihailovs and Jurijs Gani\u0146\u0161, Russian Yegor Dudnikov and Belarusian-Americal lawyer Jura\u015b Ziankovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article “\u0421alls for Sanctions” was included in the Criminal Code on January 1, 2022, according to Viasna’s report. “The provision became one of the tools of repression after the 2020 protests, allowing punishment for statements on social networks and in the media. Most of those convicted received long sentences in penal colonies. Some were sentenced in absentia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights activists noted that justice officials prosecuted not only activists and politicians, but also various professionals, such as lawyers, journalists, and doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The maximum penalty on this charge is 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
