March 8, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Gender equality is unattainable and under a systematic attack in Belarus, Marharyta Vorychava, in charge of youth policy at the opposition transition cabinet, has said on International Women’s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInfluential political forces, authoritarian regimes and anti-democratic groups around the world use disinformation and misogynistic narratives to intimidate, silence and destroy women’s voices,\u201d the cabinet\u2019s Telegram channel reports, quoting her as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Belarus, women face discrimination both from the current government and because of deep-rooted stereotypes, the politician said, listing the gender wage gap, the official register of banned jobs for women and persisting gender-based violence as examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who openly protect women’s rights are often harassed, intimidated and even physically assaulted, Vorychava added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has no law to address domestic violence after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in 2018 dismissed legislation drafted by authorities in cooperation with civic society groups as \u201cnonsense copied primarily from the West.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
