March 10, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union countries have not allowed at least 216 people to cross the border illegally via Belarus in the first week of March, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland thwarted most of the attempts, 193, and Latvia, 23. Lithuania did not report irregular border crossings in the first week of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irregular crossings rose 38.5 percent month on month yet dropped by more than a half year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland extended border area entry ban today by another 90 days. Initially introduced last June, the ban restricted access to some areas along the Polish-Belarusian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw praised the effectiveness of the ban, noting a steady decrease in irregular border crossings in 267 days since the ban has been in force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the EU has not allowed 1,333 people to cross illegally via Belarus. Poland was the major target with 1,004 irregular crossings, followed by Latvia with 230 attempts and Lithuania with 99 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
