The man has been in custody for three weeks and may be charged with promoting extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homiel police arrested businessman D\u017amitryj Lebiadzie\u016d, pro-government sources said. In a police video, he admits to following opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alena Drabud\u017aka is under arrest in Minsk,&nbsp;<em>Na\u0161a Niva<\/em>&nbsp;reported. Authorities accuse the university dorm manager of encouraging students to stage protests in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michai\u0142 Raha\u016dco\u016d was arrested in Minsk for online comments,&nbsp;<em>Na\u0161a Niva<\/em>&nbsp;said. He may face criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hrodna police arrested a man for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka on social media, a Telegram channel monitoring politically-motivated persecution in Hrodna and the Hrodna region reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge in Sviet\u0142ahorsk, Homiel region, fined former&nbsp;<em>Ranak TV&nbsp;<\/em>journalist Andrej Lipski 740 rubels (over $230) for sharing opposition content and ruled to confiscate his smartphone, the Homiel branch of Viasna reported. Before the August 3 trial, police searched his home citing &#8220;threats in a Telegram chat against an employee of the Investigative Committee.&#8221; In June, Lipski had served a seven-day jail term on similar charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late July, a judge in Or\u0161a, Viciebsk region, fined Inha Tyl\u010dyk 1.110 rubels (about $350) for alleged picketing on social media, the Viciebsk branch of Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piotr Staracytara\u016d from Mazyr, Homiel region, will go on trial in Homiel on August 14, Viasna reported. He faces a total of five criminal charges that human rights defenders consider politically motivated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities transferred jailed researchers Valeryja Ka\u015bciuhova and Ta\u0107ciana Kuzina to women&#8217;s prison in Homiel, the Homiel branch of Viasna said. Both are currently serving 10-year prison terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of August 11, human rights defenders identified at least 1,490 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
