March 10, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Minsk expects to increase cargo transshipment\u00a0through seaports in northwestern Russia significantly, according to an official letter from Transport Minister Alaksiej Lachnovi\u010d to his Russian counterpart Roman Starovoyt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk <\/em>got a copy of the June 2024 classified letter from the BelPol association of former security officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document focused on building and upgrading railway infrastructure linking Belarus with ports in northwestern Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lachnovi\u010d reported that the infrastructure capacity should more than double compared with the 2023 level to about 47.3 million tons annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transshipment of potash fertilizers was expected to grow 2.9 times, petroleum products 1.8 times and wood products 2.6 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2024, Lachnovi\u010d reported that Belarus used 14 Russian ports for transshipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister said that in January-August, the volume of Belarusian products exported through Russia’s ports increased by 10 percent from the same period in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusians have prioritized cargo transshipment via Russian ports after Lithuanian ports’ refusal to cooperate amid Western sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 22, an agreement was signed for Arctic Gate to build a large port in Murmansk for the transshipment of Belarusian cargoes by 2028. The design allows for the transshipment of 25-30 million tons of goods per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
