March 12, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The European Parliament has voted 419 to 204 with 46 abstentions to pass a resolution<\/a> that identifies Russia, supported by its allies Belarus, China, North Korea and Iran, as “the most significant direct and indirect threat against the EU.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excerpts from the document, which is yet to be published, have bith een released by the European Parliament press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It notes that the delegates called on the EU to urgently ensure security by strengthening its relations with like-minded partners and significantly reducing dependence on countries outside the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Parliament said the EU should support Ukraine and become more resilient itself to achieve peace and stability on the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe faces the most serious military threat to its territorial integrity since the end of the Cold War, the resolution says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MEPs call on the EU’s members, international partners and NATO allies to lift all restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons systems against military targets on Russian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Polish media, the document mentioned the Eastern Shield and Baltic Defense Line programs, which might become the EU’s flagship projects to deter and overcome potential threats from the East. One<\/em>t reported that defending the EU’s land, air and sea borders would contribute to the security of the EU and its eastern flank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 6, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged Europe to fully secure its borders, especially with Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister called the Eastern Shield a priority. “It is not just a Polish project, as the Finns and the Baltic countries are also involved,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
