March 13, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on March 12 as Iryna Sur\u017eyk, an employee with the Pielenh defense company, went on trial in Minsk on charges of calling for sanctions, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) included the Belarusian open-source intelligence project Phoenix in the list of extremist groups, according to the interior ministry. The KGB listed Vital Kandracienka, who blogs under the nickname Virus, as a member of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry announced extremist content designations for the Tipichnaya Belarus<\/em> chat on Telegram; baza_florida<\/em>, kotosby<\/em> and artasok<\/em> on Instagram; KOTOS<\/em> on Facebook, Bes Live<\/em> on YouTube, BelPravda<\/em> on Odnoklassniki, reformculture<\/em>, artsiombrukhan <\/em>and beslive <\/em>on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed journalist Dzianis Iva\u0161yn has served four years out of his 13-year prison term, Radyjo Svaboda <\/em>reported. Last month, he was placed in a punishment cell for two weeks. Rights groups consider his persecution to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court adjourned the hearing of a criminal case against journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 after ordering an examination of his analytical texts, journalist Siarhiej Vahana\u016d said on Facebook. Authorities accuse Ilja\u0161 of discrediting the state and association with an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aleh Ahieje\u016d, deputy head of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ), was put on interstate wanted list by Minsk, following a similar move against BAJ head Barys Harecki in January, the association said. Charges against them remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities put up for sale a car belonging to Dzianis Kire\u0161\u010danka, who had earlier served 18 months in prison on charges of rioting, linked to his participation in 2020 postelection protests, the Pravo Imeyut Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of March 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,215 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
