March 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The easing of potash sanctions against Belarus \u201cwould be a big mistake,\u201d Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas has told Delfi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comment follows reports that the United States may seek a possible sanctions relief for Russia and Belarus as US President Donald Trump seeks to restore ties with Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, the Belarusian regime misses out on almost half a billion dollars from fertilizer exports due to the rising cost of logistics and the current sanctions,” Paluckas noted. Lithuania and the whole region are not interested in allowing Minsk to earn that money, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington should be aware of the security threats “that will arise if we support the economies of hostile countries,\u201d the official stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both NATO and the United States would face more problems if the sanctions are lifted, he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the European Union\u2019s leaders will face a challenge of persuading Hungary to extend sanctions against Russia, Paluckas admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Lithuanian PM expressed concerns over potential pressure from Washington on Vilnius to resume supplies of Belarusian fertilizers via the Port of Klaip\u0117da as the US is looking for cheaper fertilizers after imposing duties on Canada, the world\u2019s leading manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on Belarus\u2019 potash giant Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij in 2021 over allegations of human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state-run company remains a key source of income for the Alaksandar  \u0141uka\u0161enka regime, according to a recent ruling from the European Court of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A report assessing national security threats, published by Lithuania\u2019s State Security Department on March 7, points to Minsk\u2019s attempts to restore the export of potash fertilizers through Klaip\u0117da. It suggested that Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij is \u201ctrying to maintain business ties in Lithuania.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
