March 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Council of the European Union has formulated its negotiating position regarding the prospective tariffs on agricultural products and some nitrogen fertilizers from Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The tariffs are expected to reduce Russian export revenues, thereby limiting Russia’s ability to finance its war of aggression against Ukraine,” the EU body said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The agricultural products affected by the new tariffs constitute 15 percent of all agricultural imports from Russia (in 2023). Once the new tariffs come into force, all agricultural imports from Russia will be subject to EU tariffs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measure is designed to reduce dependence on Russia and Belarus, encourage domestic production, and support the EU fertilizer industry while ensuring that Russia does not benefit commercially from continuing to export to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will also allow diversifying deliveries from third countries to create a stable supply of fertilizers and, crucially, ensure that they remain affordable for EU farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tariff increases for the fertilizers will be phased in over a transitional period of three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Once the European Parliament has adopted its position, both institutions will need to agree on a common text. The Council will then formally adopt the regulation by qualified majority,” the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
