March 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus’ State Customs Committee (SCC) reports that Latvian officers stopped processing vehicles, starting 2 p.m. on Sunday, at the Paternieki-Hryharo\u016d\u0161\u010dyna checkpoint, the only open checkpoint at the Belarusian-Latvian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe movement of trucks and passenger vehicles has been stopped both for entry into Belarus and for exit from the country. The Latvian side has put up special security fencing panels,\u201d the SCC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, there are no queues of cars in this area, but the ban may cause them, it said. \u201cThe resumption of traffic will be announced additionally,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, the Latvian National Alliance proposed a bill to ban passenger transportation to Belarus and Russia, citing security risks and the import of sanctioned goods, and suggested coordinating the ban with other Baltic states. The ruling New Unity initiated amendments to stop tourism companies from promoting and providing their services in Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvian officials regularly urge citizens not to travel to the east, citing security concerns. In October 2024, the foreign ministry reported that it was aware of 26 Latvians arrested in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
