March 17, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Polish border guards did not allow at least 114 third-country foreigners to cross the border illegally via Belarus on March 14, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of daily attempts is comparable to October 1, 2024, when 128 irregular crossings were reported. Over the past six months, this number has fluctuated between 1 and 96, with no attempts recorded for 11 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland thwarted 746 irregular crossings in the first two weeks of March, 41 percent more than in the first half of February but 17 percent less year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Poland extended border area entry ban by another 90 days. Initially introduced last June, the ban restricted access to some areas along the Polish-Belarusian border. Warsaw praised its effectiveness, noting a steady decrease in irregular border crossings since the ban has been in force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the EU has not allowed 1,924 people to cross illegally via Belarus, an almost 10-percent increase year on year. Poland remains the major target with 1,557 irregular crossings, followed by Latvia with 254 attempts and Lithuania with 913 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
