March 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Latvia has reopened the Paternieki-Hryharo\u016d\u0161\u010dyna checkpoint for vehicles at the shared border with Belarus about nine hours after halting operations on March 16, the Belarusian State Border Committee reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia shut the checkpoint both for entry into Belarus and for exit from the country at 2 p.m. to put up additional security fencing, according to the reports by the Belarusian customs agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riga has not disclosed the reasons, but the move could have been linked to irregular border crossings by third-country foreigners from Belarus via the checkpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2023, Latvia closed the Silene border crossing at its shared border with Belarus indefinitely, citing concerns about illegal migration at the Belarus-EU border ongoing since spring 2021. The move left Paternieki as the only operating checkpoint between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the Latvian National Alliance proposed a bill to ban passenger transportation to Belarus and Russia, citing security risks and the imports of sanctioned goods, and suggested coordinating the ban with other Baltic states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ruling New Unity also initiated amendments to stop tourism companies from promoting and providing their services in Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
