March 17, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has launched a three-day strategic command staff exercise, the CSTO press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff Andrei Serdyukov described the exercise as a \u201cplanned and key event in the system of joint training\u201d this year. It is not directed \u201cagainst any specific states or military blocs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise should improve crisis response in assessing the situation in the regions of collective security and prepare proposals and draft decisions on the deployment of collective rapid reaction forces, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise’s first two stages will focus on preventing crisis situations in the Eastern European and Central Asian regions of collective security, while the final stage will include a peacekeeping drill in Tajikistan\u2019s Khatlon region, according to the Belarusian defense ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the exercise, decisions drafted by CSTO agencies will be communicated to member states as reference data for planning joint and specific exercises that will take place in Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in September-October this year, the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CSTO is a military-political alliance whose declared goals are strengthening peace, international and regional security and stability, and protecting its member states\u2019 independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty. It consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Yerevan suspended its participation accusing its individual members of \u201cplanning a war\u201d against Armenia together with Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
