March 17, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian judges have convicted at least 133 people of terrorism-related charges in the last few years, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of them, 40 were sentenced for supporting Ukraine in its war against Russian invaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen defendants were tried in absentia; nine were foreign nationals; and four were of retirement age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecutors referred to seven articles of the Criminal Code, most commonly the one titled “Act of Terrorism.” Judges sentenced 71 people on this charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 21 people were sentenced for allegedly founding or being members of terrorist organizations. Eleven were accused of “acts of terrorism” against state or public figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to human rights activists, authorities prosecuted at least 17 people Belarusians for donating to opposition or resistance groups using the charge of “terrorism funding.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 17, the “terrorist list” compiled by the Committee for State Security contains 1,352 entries and names 1,249 individuals. Of them, 555 are Belarusian nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terrorist designation requires banks to freeze the designated persons\u2019 accounts. The designees cannot conduct any wireless cash transactions through banks and the post office. They cannot receive money transfers in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
